TREASURES of SINOP

Depart the pier by motorcoach to first visit the Archaeological Museum of Sinop with objects dating from the Hittite, Hellenistic, Phrygian, Roman and Byzantine periods. These include beautiful golden icons, coins, clay, glass, stone and metal items, and ceramics. Don’t miss the prehistoric objects displayed in the archaeological section, and out in the courtyard you will find masonry, stones, sarcophagi and inscriptions. Next, you will visit Alaaddin Mosque, constructed after the conquest of Sinop Province and typical of the Seljukian period. The mosque is located at the southern edge of a large courtyard and the building itself is based on a rectangular plan and features five domes. The courtyard contains a water tank and fountain, and ancient mausoleums. You will also visit the Pervane Medressah religious school, built in the 13th century. This is now a handicraft center and you will have time to browse among stalls stocked with locally-made original textiles, cotton clothes and traditional wooden items. Enjoy a refreshment of local fruit-juices, tea, and coffee with snacks, then return to the ship or take advantage of an optional drop-off in front of the port area to stroll around the old castle area. Here you will find shops specializing in the beautiful, handmade nautical wood carvings for which Sinop is famous throughout Turkey. From here, it is an easy walk back to the ship.
